CHI SIAMO
Sud Sardegna, Sardegna) in via Roma 68.

WHO WE ARE
We are an association free from profit, non-partisan and apolitical, which has for institutional purposes the promotion of any activity useful for learning and disseminating artistic culture. It is based in the premises of the former Male Elementary Schools of Iglesias (South Sardinia Province, Sardinia) in via Roma 68. It aims to enhance the cultural and artistic heritage left by the illustrious artist Remo Branca, whose passage in the city of Iglesias has left an indelible mark in the field of art and culture. It was born on May 6, 2008 with the aim of reviving woodcut art, started in Iglesias in 1926 by Remo Branca, engraver, painter and writer through the establishment of the Decorative Art School at the Liceo Scientifico d'Iglesias, in which Branca was first secretary, then teacher and finally headmaster. Remo Branca is recognized as having the local birthright, an art successfully practiced by the brothers Giovanni and Enea Marras, Mansueto Giuliani, Giovanni Desogus and Giorgio Carta, now disappeared, and Carlo Murroni. The "Remo Branca" Association was strongly desired by the painter and woodcutter Piero Barranca who in recent years has promoted the art of woodcut by presenting it to the public and proposing to public institutions courses of direction and training of aspiring artists, giving conferences and disseminating the art of Remo Branca who, in his presence in Iglesias, was the forerunner of woodcut. Barranca has collected the legacy left by his teacher Giovanni Marras and wants to pass on this iconographic trend; to this end he has gathered in a "Cenacle" those who already practice xylography and those who want the first approach to this expressive technique; Engravers, painters, experimenters of new artistic forms, art institutes and admirers have joined the call. The association is a reality, it includes an operational group that produces and presents its works to the public. The Association was able to enjoy, from the very beginning, the strong interest in its initiatives by the son of Remo Branca, Francesco Paolo, born in Iglesias in the period in which his father worked there (1925-1936), who agreed to he was able to become the Honorary President and to whom he donated a large part of his father's conspicuous artistic and book heritage, as well as to the Liceo Scientifico and to the Municipality of Iglesias itself. The Association has so far given life to important xylographic initiatives such as the exhibitions in Buggerru and Carloforte in 2008; in the summer of 2009 the exhibition at the Exmà in Cagliari with the participation of 47 xylographers from Iglesias, a number that gives the measure of how intense the xylographic activity is in the city, of which both the quantitative and the qualitative level must be emphasized ; the exhibition in October 2009 with the patronage of the Geomineral Park of Sardinia and that in December 2009, the latter in order to raise funds for a scholarship for the Remo Branca Art School in Iglesias. The Association has about 150 members, of which 40 woodcutters are members. A permanent exhibition illustrates their works; but the Xylography, however, is not the only activity that takes place there since the Painting, Watercolor, Poetry and Prose, Photography, Modeling, Choral Singing, Flute, Theater, Tango Laboratories have been activated since autumn 2009 and Chess. The activity of the workshops is continuously reflected in the individual and collective exhibitions that follow one another with constant regularity in the headquarters of the Association: painting and sculpture exhibitions, evenings of poetry and music, presentation of books; an intense activity, therefore, which draws the attention of citizens to whom an invitation to participate and associate is also addressed.
